Wrestling Archives, 2006:
This is the first season that Oneida has wrestled an all varsity schedule in
five years. Coach Burke decided to go with the all varsity schedule because they
had three wrestlers place at regionals last season.
“Since we placed three guys last year, it only made sense to get better mat
experience to prepare them for the regional tournament,” Burke said.
Burke said the focus this season won’t be on wins and losses, but it will be
gaining experience that will be very valuable come regional time.
“We may be facing state qualifiers in these tournaments that we are in this
season,” Burke said. “If our guys can give them a run for their money that just
gives us more preparation for regionals.”
Those regionals will be held at state power house Wrightstown. The regional
looks to be one of if not the most difficult in the state for division three. It includes the host as well as Brillion, Manitowoc Lutheran, Mishicot, Reedsville
and Roncalli.
Leading the Thunderhawks this season is junior Eddie Metoxen. Metoxen will jump
up a weight class from 152 last year to 160 pounds this season.
Metoxen placed in numerous tournaments last season and won two matches in
regionals as well.
“Eddie, by far is our best and most complete wrestler,” said Burke. "He’s in a
tough weight class, but I expect him to do well.”
Sophomore Sean Metoxen is also expected to achieve big things this season. He
was the first Oneida wrestler since Dan George Skenandore to win a regular
season varsity match. Sean defeated a wrestler from Lena 14-6 in the Little
Chute Tournament on December 3. He also won a match at regionals last season.
Sophomore Michael Stevens is also returning from last season. He will wrestle at
130 pounds this season. Stevens returns with the experience of winning a
regional match last season as well.
The lone senior of the group is John House. He will wrestle at 189 pounds and
will be looked upon to provide leadership to the young squad.
Newcomers this season are sophomore Lakwaho Mc Lester and freshman Joshlin
Skenandore. McLester will take the mat at 135 pounds and Skenandore will wrestle
at 140 pounds.
Overall Burke is excited about the team this year. He is anxious to see how well
the team does against varsity competition and is looking forward to the
challenge that it presents to him and his young team.
“Our guys have been working hard each and every day at practice,” Burke said.
“Hopefully all the hard work will pay off.”
The Thunderhawks next tournament is at Campellsport on December 10. They follow
that tournament at Fon Du Lac on December 17. Wrestling begins at 10 A.M. for
each tournament.
