Water Drum

Bear Rattle

Now then, when he sent his messengers, our Creator, he gave us four important matters. Now the first was the Great Feather Dance. The second was the Men’s Chants. The third, the Drum Dance. And the fourth the Peachstone Game. Now these four important matters, our Creator sent words down. He thought these would be conducted here on earth. Now for the Drum Dance, he informed them of how it should be. The drum must be made from Bass wood. The deer hide will be used to cover it and there will be water put in it. A drumstick will be made to use with the drum. Also a rattle will be used. They used a bark rattle in old times. Nowadays they use the cow or buffalo horn rattle. Inside the horn is beebee pellets, stones, or seeds. Different Clan symbols are carved on the horn or handle. The Water Drum and Rattle are used during Ceremonies and at Social Dances.
