PARENT COMMITTEE MEETING

November 10, 2005

Oneida Nation Schools Parent Meeting

Turtle School (ONES)

6:00 P.M.

Present: Denice Beans , Annette Cornelius, Sylvia Cornelius, Frieda Clary, Laura Cornelius, Crystal Danforth, Tracy Metoxen, Laurie Johnson, Lynn Adrian, Toni Osterburg, Sharon Mousseau, Evelyn Elm

Meeting started at 6:00 P.M. with a welcome by chairperson Laurie Johnson.

Minutes from the meeting of October 20-05 were presented with clarification regarding Susan White’s comments regarding "communication, understood to mean the Oneida community as a whole , not just ONS. Minutes approved.

Report on the JOM Budget, which is the same as the October report as the new report till later in the month. Clarification the Money outstanding was clarified, which Evelyn was not sure of in the October meeting.

The following requests being considered at this meeting are;

A. Chemistry Show- Becky Nutt not present (old request)

A review of the middle school request was reviewed by Toni Osterburg as she has now completed the formal requests. She informed us she may need to increase the amount needed as we have had additional enrollees in the middle school area. She was informed to bring these additional numbers to the January meeting at which time it will be addressed.

B. Poster Contest- Sylvia Cornelius-Waupoose -

Sylvia represents the On^yote.aka Living in Balance committee who requesting financial support to sponsor a "Poster Contest" for the students at ONS to promote eating healthy and the importance of a nutritional diets in the community. These posters would be placed on the Transit Buses and other places of high traffic in the community. The request is for $1500.00. After discussion, the request was approved.

C. Reading Incentive Program Request- Lynn Adrian ONH a request to purchase a book name "the Chronicles of Narnia" for students at high school to encourage extra reading among the high school population with the added incentive of attending the movie at Bay Park Square on December 15-05. This is for the special education students and other students. Certain criteria would be required in order to accomplish this goal.

A similar project was done last year with good results This was approved pending a more fully detailed requests. Lynn will comply.

D. Wise Woman Gathering Request a request was received from Alice Skenandore to extend another level of the "abstinence program " at the high school level. Because this requires additional support of the top Administration and school board, it was given to sherry for review /action etc.

A presentation was given by Annette Cornelius on the subject of nutrition from research she has been doing as part of her projects at UWGB .She shared info regarding a survey done with students at ONS in 1999, which revealed high risk area’s regarding our students regarding weight. She also shared her research comparing indigenous foods with processed foods, and discussed the use of flour in our diets.

A handout regarding the Safe and Drug Schools Survey was shared with the group.

An additional survey will be handed out regarding how our school is doing in reaching out to involve parents, community members, and students in a meaningful manner on parent/teacher conference day November 17, from 1:00-7:00 P.M. An incentive for parents will be available for those parents who do fill out the survey.

E. Other

Need for an additional co-chair for the parent group was presented. Frieda Clary indicated and interest.

Note; chairperson has approached Travis Jiskra, Technology Coordinator for the ONS, about having a class for parents to learn how to use the computer , which is available to all parents in the PARENT RESOURCE ROOM at the Turtle School between the hours of 8:00 AM and 3PM.
