ONEIDA NATION SCHOOL SYSTEM PARENT MEETING TURTLE SCHOOL CAFETERIA FEBRUARY 9, 2006 MINUTES "COME AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE" NEXT PARENT MEETING: MARCH 16, 2006 MEAL AND CHILD CARE PROVIDED Chair: Laurie Johnson Co Chair: Jodell Crawford Attendees: Jodell Crawford, Frieda Clary, Sharon Mousseau, Lynn Adrian. Mr. Ganka, Patrick Madrid, Sue Doxtator, Michelle Hill, Evelyn Elm I. Welcome By Jodell Crawford. Jodell welcomed everyone to the meeting and talked about her involvement in her childrens’ lives and what a difference it really makes. Packets were put together based on Susan White’s request to have packets prepared before the meeting. She also requested that if they are making a request for funding, they should prepare the request and have it in the packet before the meeting or else be there in person to request the budget items. It is too difficult to make a decision without all the information. Jodell said that this is a new process and we will try to do that at meetings but still new on the process so bear with us. II. Meeting Minutes January 29, 1006 and that should be January 19, 2006. Corrections/Approval. Approval of minutes from January 19th. Patrick Madrid motioned to approve and Michelle Hill seconded. III. Update of old requests/programs 1. Purchased of mittens and hats was completed and Jodell got a good price on purchased items. 2. Nutrition Contest/Dinner by Sylvia Cornelius Waupoose. We believe it was successful but will need to move this to the next months’ agenda. I am not sure that we notified Sylvia on the meeting but will need to do that next month. IV. Budget Report from January 2006 JOM. 1. Frieda Clary presented budget for FY2006-2007 She handed out the previous years’ budget and had a discussion on line items and what each line item entailed with assistance from Evelyn Elm and Sharon Mousseau, Thank You Very Much. Jodell was kind enough to prepare the budget from last month and decreasing the amount from last month, we currently have: $23,681.19 for FY2005 left. $38,058.00 for FY2006 is anticipated but has not been awarded yet. --------------- $61,739.19 budgeted from January 1-December 31 2006 to be spent for this year. A parent had asked that we have copies of budget and request and also to have the people presenting with hand outs for review if possible, for future meetings. Frieda will be working with Nancy Blaska and Sharon Mousseau on budget items to see what we can spend for future projects. There are certain line items that are needed in fall, such as the Wal-Mart Gift Certificates in fall for school supplies, clothes, shoes and other needs. We hope to have a completed budget by the next meeting. V. Old Business: 1. Parent Involvement Policy Status-Susan White Susan could not be with us tonight so Sharon Mousseau reported that the Oneida Nation School Board had approved the Parent Involvement Policy at the Monday, February 6, 2006 Meeting. This policy has been approved, but can be amended as needed. Sharon was able to give the BIA a copy of the approved policy before they left our school. 2. Gentle Directions for Life-Susan Arnold The Personal Enhancement Series will start soon with Edi Cornelius-Grosskopf, Facilitating. There is still room for more participants and you can use 50 points from your Parent Incentive points to participate in this series. Edi is a great facilitator so join us for some fun.
3. Dance Club Outline/Plan Michelle Hill Indian Dance and Outfitting making activities for 40 youth. Michelle presented a budget of $15,300.00 without the sinew, thread and a few other items. We didn’t think we had enough resources to approve such a large budget so we approved $8,000 so start with 20 kids and supplies. Sharon believes that stipends for volunteers for teaching dancing, outfit making, drum making and rattle making and other such activities can be provided out of the school wide program budget. The additional supplies may be able to purchased through the CAPPS Team as this cultural activity reduces at-risk behavior and underage drinking in our youth and encourages cultural values and standards. Michelle needs to contact Justine Souto for the possible forms that may be needed and more information. Motion by Frieda Clary to approve $8,000; Seconded by Patrick Madrid; Motion Carries. VI. Request for Funding: 1. Request for funding for supplies for Music/Choir-Cal Siegrist, Band ($500.00) Choir and Band Request: $500.00 to purchase music and supplies for both groups for the remainder of the season. Request approved by Frieda Clary; Seconded by Patrick Madrid; Motion Carries. OTHER ITEMS: Mr. Ganka mentioned that the ski-trip scheduled for 2-16 moved to March 3, 2006. Frieda reported on how the food is going for the basketball teams. Cheryl requested food but was not going too smoothly, so Frieda sent out a GroupWise to all parties on 2-10-06 to explain the process of how to request the funds, and that the teams could possibly purchase fresh fruit and subs through the cafeteria or nursing home and encouraged them to do so. Forms are available to request food and if there are any more problems, to contact Sharon or Nancy for further assistance. We need to invite Sylvia to the next meeting for a follow-up on Nutrition Contest. We believe it went really well. Update from Lynn Adrian: Chronicles of Nardia Youth did a great job on reading their books, doing reports and were extremely well behaved at theater after completing all tasks assigned. Lynn was proud of their accomplishments and they way they behaved themselves. A great time was had by all and it was very successful. Thanks Lynn for all of your hard work and for always taking the time with our children. It is much appreciated. NEXT MEETING DATE: MARCH 16, 2006 Yaw^ko for attending and supporting your child and see you at the next meeting!! |
