How do School Counselors and other Student Services staff help Students?

They help students to realize their full potential by making good decisions. All young people need assistance as they grow and develop. School Counselors and student services staff are trained to share knowledge and skills with students to help them meet their personal, social, educational, and career needs.

How are Guidance/Counseling and other student services provided to students?

Guidance Counselors meet with classroom groups of students on a regular basis throughout the school year as part of the Developmental Guidance Program. A variety of activities are conducted to teach concepts and skills in such areas as Self concept, responsibility, problem solving, decision making, goal setting, coping, learning, and the world of work. In addition, counselors work with students on an individual basis to help them with personal/social concerns or learning difficulties. They provide crisis counseling and referrals to outside agencies if needed or requested by parents.

In small group sessions, counselors work with small groups of students who have common needs or concerns such as anger management or social skills. This approach is helpful because children learn from each other as well as from the counselor.

Group Facilitator, Social Work and Student Advocacy services are provided upon referral from teachers, requests from parents or students themselves.
