D.A.R.E. & G.R.E.A.T. Program

The DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education ) program is provided to all 4th & 5th grade students. The DARE program gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs or violence. DARE goes beyond traditional drug abuse and violence prevention programs. It gives children the skills needed to recognize and resist the subtle and overt pressures that cause them to experiment with drugs or become involved in gangs or violent activities.

The DARE curriculum was designed to be taught by police officers whose training and experience gave them the background needed to answer the sophisticated questions often posed by young students about drugs and crime. Prior to entering the DARE program, officers undergo 80 hours of special training in areas such as child development, classroom management, teaching techniques and communication skills.

The GREAT (Gang Resistance and Education ) program is provided to middle school students.

GREAT is an educational, school-based gang prevention program designed to help children set goals, make sound judgments, learn how to resolve conflicts without violence, and understand how gangs and youth violence negatively affect the quality of their lives. The GREAT curriculum provides teenagers with critical skills and information to resist gang involvement and learn to become responsible members of society.
